Budget, Book Bans & Boosting the Economy | Q+A
This week on Q+A ... Ahead of the federal budget we get, a debate on the federal budget we want.
Treasurer Jim Chalmers faces global instability, rising debt, mounting welfare bills, stubborn inflation and a financially stressed electorate that could throw out the government within a year. Former Treasury boss Ken Henry warns we’re on a “knife edge” and squibbing critical economic reform.
So what should be in the books on Tuesday? What are the spending priorities and where’s the fat to pay for them? What would a fairer, more sustainable tax system look like? How do we seize new opportunities and rebuild the economy to deliver better services, higher productivity and future wealth?
Panellists: Independent MP for Wentworth Allegra Spender, Independent Senator for ACT David Pocock, NSW Shadow Minister for Health Matt Kean Broadcaster & journalist Janine Perrett and Political strategist Kos Samaras.
This episode was broadcast on Monday May 13, 2024.

Q+A is a television discussion program that focuses mostly on politics but ranges across all of the big issues that set Australians thinking, talking and debating.
It is driven by interaction: Q+A provides a rare opportunity for Australian citizens to directly question and hold to account politicians and key opinion leaders in a national public forum and Q+A is broadcast live so that not only the studio audience but also the wider audience can get involved.
We aim to create a discussion that is constructive, that reflects a diverse range of views and that provides a safe environment where people can respectfully discuss their differences.
It’s impossible to represent every view on a single panel or in one audience but we’re committed to giving participants a fair go.
In order to be as inclusive and diverse as possible, the program is presented from a range of locations around the country and all Australians are encouraged to get involved through social media as well as by joining the audience.
This is an official Australian Broadcasting Corporation UA-cam channel.

I think wind and solar are keeping coal alive because for every watt of those intermittent renewables you have to build a watt of base load backup. In Australia that's coal, unless you build some nuclear power. Sooner or later you will, like the Germans, have to face the facts.

This is spot on - Norway taxes all miners @ 80% - wake up Australia - politicians are lobbied by the Multinationals therefore I can only assume they;re on the payroll - shameful - Australian citizens need to wake up & vote Gov’ts out if they choose not to go down this track - then vote independents.

I wish this narrative of global warming would die on the hill of lies it has been created on. We have had no warming for 35 years now. No temperature rise since 1988. Additionally the rise seen just prior to this (1800s and 1900s) is simply a return the the recent average following the drop during the Maunder and Daulton minimums. I think the reduction of pollution is essential, but the lie of global warming may not be the best way to convince everyone of this need.

Australian tax payer for forty years, can't afford hot water now. Am washing up in cold water & think twice about just washing my hair. Who took the multinationals' bribes? A model like Norway's could go to public health + house vulnerable citizens, instead of making multi billionaires even richer. Who owns citizens' assets? In a corrupt system it's multinationals.

May The Creator/Holy God bless those that stand for righteousness and truth. There are so many things that Australia and it's states and territories under corrupted leadership have not considered the moral standing and rights of children. Instead of pandering to those already in compromised moral s.. i was in high school when people married were discriminated against by giving unwed people the same rights..that was followed by people who commit unnatural acts (homosexuals) and "de-criminalising", then murdering babies and "marrying" people of the same sex. I am in Queensland and am blessed my family moved here from SA/Victoria so i could be born here and be raised in a conservative state where the family was protected. Once there was a change in government the morals of the state that were governed by our constitution based on Westminster/Magna Carta/Holy Bible about fifty years before Australia became a federated group of colonies. I am a child of migrants that came to Australia in the mid 1950s . There has been such a disturbing trend following the governance by the ALP in particular that everything as we know it has been under threat. Yet somehow they get in.. the rest of Australia can't be shocked unless they vote differently. Children deserve to feel safe whether unborn/ born (sanctity of human life). Children deserve the right to have a mother and father, how they've been created (egg/sperm) . I am also a born again Christian. I was once a sinner and am now a Saint because God called me to Salvation. Being saved from His final judgement that's coming.

Norway didn't tax their oil industry; they created a state-owned oil producer which developed the resources. It's pathetic that people don't understand this. You can't tax your way to prosperity. BTW, the state sponsored history is evident in the name - Statoil.

Increasing the GST will adversely impact the lower paid. The GST as it stands ensures the poorer tax payers pay more tax than a wealthy person as a proportion of their income. A family of four in a standard suburban house on $250,000 would pay lower proportional tax than the same family on $85,000. It's inequitable. Make companies pay tax by introducing a Turnover Tax (in addition to corporate income tax) to a certain amount. This would overcome companies paying 1% tax while earners like myself are forced to pay 33% with little way to reduce my taxes legally.

Everything is a fine balance. We need skills and labour to build the houses that we desperately need and staff the businesses who can’t get staff. Govt priorities and policies often work in opposite directions and the challenge is to find a way that has more upside than downside. Allegra and Pocock have no idea about the costs of policy, not only from a political sense but from a policy sense.
