Budget, Book Bans & Boosting the Economy | Q+A
This week on Q+A ... Ahead of the federal budget we get, a debate on the federal budget we want.
Treasurer Jim Chalmers faces global instability, rising debt, mounting welfare bills, stubborn inflation and a financially stressed electorate that could throw out the government within a year. Former Treasury boss Ken Henry warns we’re on a “knife edge” and squibbing critical economic reform.
So what should be in the books on Tuesday? What are the spending priorities and where’s the fat to pay for them? What would a fairer, more sustainable tax system look like? How do we seize new opportunities and rebuild the economy to deliver better services, higher productivity and future wealth?
Panellists: Independent MP for Wentworth Allegra Spender, Independent Senator for ACT David Pocock, NSW Shadow Minister for Health Matt Kean Broadcaster & journalist Janine Perrett and Political strategist Kos Samaras.
This episode was broadcast on Monday May 13, 2024.

Q+A is a television discussion program that focuses mostly on politics but ranges across all of the big issues that set Australians thinking, talking and debating.
It is driven by interaction: Q+A provides a rare opportunity for Australian citizens to directly question and hold to account politicians and key opinion leaders in a national public forum and Q+A is broadcast live so that not only the studio audience but also the wider audience can get involved.
We aim to create a discussion that is constructive, that reflects a diverse range of views and that provides a safe environment where people can respectfully discuss their differences.
It’s impossible to represent every view on a single panel or in one audience but we’re committed to giving participants a fair go.
In order to be as inclusive and diverse as possible, the program is presented from a range of locations around the country and all Australians are encouraged to get involved through social media as well as by joining the audience.
This is an official Australian Broadcasting Corporation UA-cam channel.

The biggest donors to the 2 major parties are the tax dodging fossil fuel industry as the 2 major parties are more interested in serving their donors than the best interest of the country. Besides paying little or no tax they steal 14 billion annually in corporate welfare this has to be the scam of the century pay no tax get billions in tax payer subsides and fuel the climate crisis but dont contribute the the costs of climate disasters unbelievable?????

Our governments are only interested in more profits for these multi nationals that sponsor them. They are not focused on the common Australian voter. Tax these companies that are taking our natural resources and ensure that it is to the best interest of the Australian public.

HECS debt is a perfect system of ensuring people can pay for their own education. It’s a debt that you never have to worry about paying back, it only starts taking money from you after a certain income threshold, it’s an extremely small percent of your income after you meet that threshold, and it ensures taxpayers aren’t expected to pay for someone else’s education when that person will be able to pay it off themselves once they are in the workforce.

  • @Razzanonymous

People under the age of 25 have 0 financial literacy. I don’t expect them to understand that the HECS debt is not expected to be paid off within 2 years of graduating uni, and that you don’t have to purchase the average house. You can, in fact, purchase a house that costs less than the average price. Or, hear me out, you can rent with someone else or live with your parents until you can afford to move out.

I think wind and solar are keeping coal alive because for every watt of those intermittent renewables you have to build a watt of base load backup. In Australia that's coal, unless you build some nuclear power. Sooner or later you will, like the Germans, have to face the facts.

This is spot on - Norway taxes all miners @ 80% - wake up Australia - politicians are lobbied by the Multinationals therefore I can only assume they;re on the payroll - shameful - Australian citizens need to wake up & vote Gov’ts out if they choose not to go down this track - then vote independents.

I wish this narrative of global warming would die on the hill of lies it has been created on. We have had no warming for 35 years now. No temperature rise since 1988. Additionally the rise seen just prior to this (1800s and 1900s) is simply a return the the recent average following the drop during the Maunder and Daulton minimums. I think the reduction of pollution is essential, but the lie of global warming may not be the best way to convince everyone of this need.

Australian tax payer for forty years, can't afford hot water now. Am washing up in cold water & think twice about just washing my hair. Who took the multinationals' bribes? A model like Norway's could go to public health + house vulnerable citizens, instead of making multi billionaires even richer. Who owns citizens' assets? In a corrupt system it's multinationals.
